Clan Name: Kaguya
Clan History:
The Kaguya are one of the four founding clans of Chusekigakure, but you will rarely find the major players of the clan anywhere near the fortress village. In practice, this esteemed and notorious family is split into two. The inheritors of the clan's bloodline reside in the pillar village, near all clan members showing promise in shikotsumyaku sent there. Few who do not inherit the bloodline (the vast majority of the clan) follow them in the tricky and mysterious path of a shinobi1. They view the shinobi as political tools and the village as a staging ground, looking down upon the 'inelegant' (and simply uncomfortable to witness in action) bloodline wielders.
For the rest of this history, for clarity's sake, I will be using the term 'Wildflower Kaguya' in reference to those who reside outside of the village, in reference to their traditional homeland (the Wildflower Province of the western Mountain Country).
The first Yamakage, Kaguya Ichikawa, belonged to this clan. He has a fair reputation in the village - a positive but not sacred figure, spoken of with respect for his achievements but also often the butt of jokes. Among the Wildflower Kaguya, his reputation is much more controversial. Few, however, doubt that his charisma and dedication near-singlehandedly galvanized a village thought destined to fail2.
It was during the middle-late years of Ichikawa's term that the Akimichi clan arrived from the Marsh Country, and they rapidly formed a close relationship with the Kaguya of Chusekigakure. Even the frosty at best Wildflower Kaguya warmed up to them soon enough. The Kaguya and Akimichi became known for their two-ninja taijutsu cells - an overwhelming offense combined with an overwhelming defense3. Kaguya and Akimichi often integrate blowfish imagery into their outfits as a symbol of their bond, but don't ask them to explain the symbolism, they'll ask you to figure it out for yourself.
A terrible famine struck soon after the village's founding, claiming a quarter of the village's lives and no small amount of Wildflower Kaguya. If not for the Akimichi and the Yuki, the village may have collapsed altogether. Somehow, it survived this, and then it survived the death of Ichikawa not long after4. The title of Yamakage fell to an Uchiha heir designated by Ichikawa, and the ambitious among the Kaguya waited.
The death of the Second Yamakage was abrupt. The peaceful transition after the First's death was not to repeat itself, and despite careful mediation by the Akimichi and the Daimyo a violent succession crisis soon erupted. In hindsight, this conflict is viewed as a sort of proxy war for the greater political tensions in the country - and the village perceived as a political staging ground for many different clans, politicians, and business interests. The village divided into two sides, and the village's Kaguya were on the losing one - symbolic of a larger defeat of the clan's interests in the nation over which the Wildflower Kaguya are especially sour.
The rise to power of Moriyama Djinsei as Yamakage was unexpected by all, and has lead to an uneasy leveling out in the power struggle between clans. Kaguya in the village have been thoroughly cowed and if any have thoughts of giving the civil war another go they have so far kept it to themselves. The Wildflower Kaguya believe that they should have all died before surrendering, like proper warriors, but after a year or so of freezing out the village's clansmen out of punishment they quickly resumed their various plans to exert their influence over the nation and the world.
1. Among the hidden villages, Chuseki is notable for being the very smallest. The village is not barren so much as it is specialized, with a much lower ratio of civilians to shinobi residing within the village year-round compared to the other hidden villages. This approach by the Kaguya is more extreme than the other resident clans, but not especially unusual.
2. The Uchiha and Kaguya are historical rivals. The idea for an alliance started with them, after the mutual realization that the world was changing, but doubts were rife in both clans. It was even seen by many as a doomed political attempt by the Mountain Country's Daimyo to secure his own power. After his military unification of the Mountain Country in the previous decades, the greatest threat to him were the squabbling clans who were now much closer neighbours. The two most notorious working together was a dream come true, and he eagerly facilitated talks and ponied up the funds and land.
3. Over the years, these duos' dynamics have become stereotyped as a sort of manzai routine. Both clans' members are seen as a little thick, so the roles of boke and tsukkomi swap freely depending on the situation.
4. During the great famine that rocked the Mountain Country, Ichikawa fasted in solidarity with the suffering of his village and homeland. Though he lived for a few years after the end of the famine, his health never quite recovered, and he passed from illness about a decade after the founding of the village. Though the Wildflower Kaguya were apoplectic over this and the Kaguya within the village finding it at the very least questionable, it is commonly joked about as the single moment in which Ichikawa channeled his clan the most. The Kaguya are very well known for being almost showoffishly self-destructive in commitment to their ideals.

Clan Traits:
-Arts of the meadow:
Choosing this trait grants the character a bonus tertiary specialty in either weaponry or taijutsu.
The Kaguya are famous for their martial arts, their styles integrating a healthy mix of weapon and body attacks. There are multiple traditions, emblematic of competing desires for beauty, instilling fear, and sheer practicality in combat. Most popular in terms of weapons are shortswords and spears, and their traditions are designed to be used either with metal weapons or with the bone weapons of the clan's bloodline users. Various grapples are very common, as well as many 'cheap tricks' such as groin or eye attacks.
-No surrender!:
Choosing this trait grants the character the ability to lower the cooldown of their taijutsu or weaponry techniques to a minimum of one post. For each post of cooldown they remove, they must spend an equal number of posts in a state of single-minded, bloodthirsty pursuit of their enemy's death - they will not stop until their target is dead, they will not back down no matter the odds, and their reaction time to any threat that isn't the enemy directly before them is halved. If the foe they are homing in on has a way to attack from behind without indicating that within the Kaguya's field of vision, that reduced reaction time will apply.
The Kaguya are infamous for their noble snobbishness flipping on a dime in times of war into unyielding, unnecessary brutality... but above that, extreme, near-suicidal stubbornness. If not for their poor reputation, the Kaguya may have a reputation for great bravery - but alas, that is not their fate, and the deaths of Kaguya in pursuit of impossible victories is largely held in consternation outside of the clan.
-Floral notes:
The Kaguya are well known for their cosmetics, particularly makeups and perfumes. Through frequent use and secret techniques, they can slowly infuse their favoured choices with their chakra. If the user uses their makeup as the pattern for a fuuinjutsu seal or the scent of their perfume as a genjutsu trigger, they can cast the jutsu in question with the chakra cost of a jutsu one rank lower. This can apply to other cosmetics and styles of jutsu in theory, but such edge cases will have to be specified and approved as jutsu.

-Culture, quirks, fun facts:
- The Wildflower Province is famous for its dairy, particularly cheeses and yogurts, and these foods are treated with fondness and nostalgia by many Kaguya. Shikotsumyaku users need to keep up on their calcium and phosphates, after all! Seafood is also popular for village Kaguya for this reason, particularly sardines.
- Kaguya of all genders are expected to wear makeup for formal clan occasions, and it is common for them to do so casually as well. Wildflower Kaguya favour a traditional 'noble' look with the clan's signature dot eyebrows and stark eyeliner. Village Kaguya can get a little more out there - the classic look is most common, but there's more innovation with colours and shapes. This is where you find the geometric designs and the glitter!
- The Kaguya in Chusekigakure build their own tight-knit family structures - the relative youth of the village, the famine, and the civil war giving them little opportunity to start new blood families. They share the common experience of being shipped off to be a soldier with no say in the matter, and they accept new Kaguya children in the village with as much warmth as they can muster. Between them and the Akimichi, they are rarely wanting for care or for food.
- Their fashion sense tends towards 'minimalist and incredibly expensive'. Dressing practically for the weather is difficult for Kaguya shinobi, due to their bloodline involving bones bursting violently out of their body, and they all find their own levels of compromise. Wildflower Kaguya tend towards lighter garments, few living to the north of Chuseki where they'd need to bundle up.
- The Kaguya are among the five shinobi clans with strongly founded claims to descent from the legendary Kaguya Otsutsuki. Of these clans, the Kaguya are the loudest about it. Their version of history involves the mythic queen's sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, creating nine demons to destroy the idyllic peace their mother created. Rather than exile or be defeated by the brothers, as in other accounts, this version posits that she gave up on the world and returned home, the last tears she shed giving rise to the first members of the Kaguya clan. Steam Country historians are skeptical of this, favouring a theory that they are descended from Hamura, but this is controversial due to contradicting accounts from the Otsutsuki and Hyuga clans' archives.
